We spent the last month exploring Uganda and Kenya in search of the best handmade goods and have all sorts of amazing new products launching soon! But first, we are pleased to introduce these exquisite baskets from the women of CERESAV, survivors of barbaric acid attacks (CERESAV = Center for Rehabilitation of Survivors of Acid and Burn Violence).
Acid attacks are as horrific as they sound and overwhelmingly target young, impoverished women. As a result of their injuries, they are no longer able to make a living in a 'normal' working environment. By teaching them how to make these fully handwoven and exceptional baskets from the comfort of their own homes they are able to weave hope, dignity and a new future from their devastating trauma.
We are in love with the beauty of these baskets and the strength of these women and know you will be as well. We have a very limited number in our first collection and are donating $25 from each sale directly back to CERESAV. We are using the rest of the money to order more baskets - the most powerful way to give these women their lives back is to help provide a consistent source of income. The more we sell, the more we can order and the more these women know they are not alone! SHOP NOW
Started in 2013, CERESAV supports 62 people (54 women, 8 men) with medical supplies, housing, home care and skills training. Founded by Hanifa Nakiryowa, herself a survivor and a truly inspirational woman, she is now in the U.S. working on her master's in International Development and Human Security. The Executive Director is Justine Mpagi (pictured below), who spent a lot of time answering my questions and sharing the personal stories of four of the most recent women to suffer attacks this past March. You can learn more and donate at their website and facebook.
