As part of our mission to ‘go exploring’ and ‘make friends’ we’re launching a series of conversations with people doing really cool things as well as elevating others - whether it is through their work, their family or just by being themselves…
A Conversation with Chris + Mary
We first met Chris & Mary at the Unique Market in downtown Los Angeles. Not only are they two of the coolest humans you’ll meet, they also have a wonderful gift shop where they curate local, handmade, artisan and ethically sourced goods designed to enrich your life. And of course we were thrilled when they started carrying goods from our Lucy & Jo with Friends collection. Here are just a few of the things we talked about:
Lucy: Hey guys! Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today. I have to say, it is such a thrill to see our goods in your store. Especially because your space just feels so good & welcoming – what was your inspiration?
Mary: Thanks for thinking of us! You know, ultimately, we live by the saying “do what you love” – we love being together, we love this neighborhood and we love handmade, unique goods.
Chris: We’re constantly blown away by the talented artists who make all the things we discover.
Mary: Yes! One of the hardest things for me is to have to turn someone down because I know how deeply personal their work is to them.
Lucy: I’ve learned that the ‘no’ isn’t personal – sometimes it’s just not a good fit or the right timing. But that lesson only comes after you hear ‘no’ a lot.
Mary: That’s so true!
Lucy: What’s your vision for the space? Why a store and not just online?
Chris: We wanted to do brick & mortar as a way to support the community, whether it’s just someone stopping by to chat or an organization that needs a space to hold a charity event. We believe that local shops help promote innovation, jobs, sustainable business practices and a wider choice for consumers. Of course, we are working to expand our web presence so the increased sales can eventually help us open a second location.
Mary: Oh yes, we just love seeing people’s reaction to the store and our collection of goods. Sometimes we’ll look at each other and say: “We really have a store!”
Lucy: That happens to me whenever we get an order through our website! It really does feel kind of magical. Okay, seriously though, you guys are so thoughtful & kind and always thinking about how to give back…where does this come from?
Mary: My mom. She was always very involved in her community and giving back and I’m just always striving to be more like her. My background is in yoga and massage so my focus has always been on the wellness of others.
Chris: It was also my parents for me too. From a young age they instilled the notion to be grateful and remember those in need. I started out in psychology and working with adults with developmental disabilities.
Lucy: I take it back. You are both horrible, selfish people (readers: this was a joke, laugh now…). Speaking of selfish, it is holiday time and I’m wondering what you recommend – I need to do some shopping…
Mary: Our gift box! It has hand-made peppermint bark, a ceramic ‘peace’ ornament, a candle with matches and all inside an amazing handmade poplar box!
